Installation Of Elevator And Escalator Systems At DIA Near Completion

Denver International Airport is Currently Undergoing a $544 Million Expansion Project

Denver International Airport (DIA), the nation’s fifth busiest airport with more than 53 million passengers traveling through the facility annually, is currently constructing a new hotel and transit center that will enhance the customer experience and provide for new business opportunities. Lerch Bates announced today that installation of the 16 elevators and 11 escalators for DIA’s Hotel and Transit Center Program is nearing completion. The Westin Denver International Airport portion of the project is scheduled to open on Nov. 19.

Lerch Bates, an employee-owned international consulting firm for vertical transportation, façade access and logistics, announced in February 2013 that it had been selected to design the elevator, escalator and façade access systems of the expansion. A focal point of Lerch Bates’ vertical transportation design for the expansion project is three colossal five-story escalators that connect the transit center on level 1 with the public plaza on level five. Paris-based light artist Yann Kersalé was selected to provide a lighting design for the train and level five canopies and a unique video-based art installation directly above the 60-foot escalators. Passengers will witness slow moving images projected onto a faceted rock-like structure fabricated from aluminum. The structure will be 23 feet wide, 36 feet tall and will cover 1,100 square feet. Kersalé is internationally acclaimed and titled the work “L’eau dans tous ses êtats” or “Water in all of its states.”

The Hotel and Transit Center Program consists of three physically integrated projects including the construction of a 519-room Westin hotel, Regional Transportation District (RTD) commuter rail and bus transit center that is expected to serve more than 18,00 rail passengers daily and a vast public plaza that will feature entertainment, art exhibits, restaurants and more. The 22.8-mile Regional Transportation District (RTD) East Rail Line, currently under construction, will connect the new commuter rail station with downtown Denver. Construction of DIA’s massive expansion project began in the fall of 2011 with the Westin hotel and public plaza slated for completion later this year and commuter rail service beginning in 2016.

The public art for the new hotel and transit center is approximately $5 million for interior and exterior projects. Denver’s Public Art Ordinance directs one percent of construction costs for public facilities over $1 million be set aside for artwork to be integrated into each project.

Global design firm Gensler serves as the designer for the Westin hotel and conference center, architect of the Public Transit Center and public plaza and master planner for the entire Hotel and Transit Center Program. Anderson Mason Dale is the Architect of Record for the Public Transit Center.

The Hotel and Transit Center Program will complete the original vision for the airport and is the first investment in DIA’s Airport City initiative. With more than 53 million passengers traveling through the airport each year, DIA is one of the busiest airline hubs in the world’s largest aviation market. DIA is the primary economic engine for the state of Colorado, generating more than $26 billion for the region annually. Lagana previously served as a senior consultant for Lerch Bates in its Florida Region, regularly assisting clients in north and central Florida as well as in Puerto Rico with equipment condition assessments, code inspections and modernization planning and execution management. His passion and dedication for assisting clients with all facets of the elevator and escalator industry has been instrumental in Lerch Bates’ rapid growth in the Sunshine State during the last four years.

Lagana served as a senior account manager and assistant service manager for KONE prior to joining Lerch Bates in October 2010. He earned Bachelor of Science degrees in business leadership and marketing from Le Moyne College in Syracuse, New York.

Jeremiah PotterLerch Bates, an international consulting firm for vertical transportation, façade access and logistics, has promoted industry leader Jeremiah Potter to regional manager of the firm’s Ohio Region.

Potter previously served as a consultant in Lerch Bates’ Ohio Region (Ohio, western Pennsylvania, eastern Indiana, Virginia and Kentucky). He quickly grew the firm’s market share and established the employee-owned company as the preferred vertical transportation consulting firm for new equipment design, modernization, maintenance evaluations, construction services and due diligence assessments.

Potter served as a territory manager and maintenance supervisor for Otis Elevator Group, a leading manufacturer of elevators, escalators and moving walkways, prior to joining Lerch Bates in May 2012. During his tenure with the firm, he was the primary account representative for The Ohio State University Medical Center, Battelle Laboratories and Continental Realty in metropolitan Columbus and provided supervision for Otis maintenance personnel in the Youngstown area.

Potter earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from The Ohio State University and a Master of Business Administration from Case Western Reserve University.
