Lerch Bates to Design Modern Facade Access System for Contemporary Arena in Downtown Sacramento

Entertainment and Sports Center to Be New Home of the Sacramento Kings

Sacramento is poised to enter an economic renaissance as the multimillion-dollar Entertainment and Sports Center (ESC) will be constructed along L and J streets, between 5th and 7th streets. The $477 million project will be the new home of the NBA’s Sacramento Kings and Lerch Bates has been awarded a contract to design the facility’s complex façade access system.

Located in the heart of downtown Sacramento, the site will serve as an iconic civic space, open to the region 365 days a year. Its centralized location, utilization of existing public infrastructure and immediate proximity to public transportation make it a model of smart growth and green development. The ESC will host Sacramento Kings home games, other sporting events, concerts, conferences, conventions and family-oriented entertainment.

ESC SacramentoTotaling more than 600,000 square feet, the ESC will include a performance bowl with general and premium seating, spacious suites, indoor standing viewing areas and an outdoor plaza with a total capacity of nearly 17,500 guests. Construction of the publicly and privately financed ESC will open fall of 2016, in time for the 2016-17 NBA season. Demolition of the site began earlier this past summer and the Kings currently play at the Sleep Train Arena, opened in 1988.

Massive 50 feet by 100 feet glass doors will create dynamic indoor and outdoor space, allowing visitors to enjoy Sacramento’s climate. The ESC will feature plazas, pedestrian circulation areas and other open spaces to provide openness and accessibility. Common open plazas will encourage pedestrian flow and access to the ESC, as well as to the surrounding restaurants, retail and commercial space. The public spaces also are expected to serve as gathering places for cultural performances and other community activities.

Global architecture firm AECOM serves as the lead architect for the ESC. Lerch Bates is currently designing the vertical transportation and façade access systems of VTB Stadium and Arena in Moscow, Russia. The arena, designed by MANICA Architecture and one of the largest projects currently being developed in the Russian Federation, features the redevelopment of historic Dynamo Stadium and the surrounding park. The exterior façade of the old stadium will be incorporated into the construction of the $700 to $750 million sports and entertainment complex. A honeycomb patterned skin will envelop the 27,000-seat soccer stadium, featuring an oculus over the playing field, and the 11,500-seat multipurpose arena. The groundbreaking design of the two ultramodern sports facilities will allow them to operate independently as well as simultaneously and is expected to be a catalyst for all sports in Russia. VTB Stadium and Arena will be the home of Football Club Dynamo Moscow when it is expected to open in 2017.

Lerch Bates Tapped to Design Vertical Transportation Systems of Downtown Denver’s Newest Mid-Rise Office Tower

1401 Lawrence is the Latest Project Announced in Rapidly Growing Mile High City

1401 LawrenceDenver’s thriving Central Business District (CBD) continues to expand with the announcement of another office mid-rise tower planned for downtown. Non-profit Downtown Denver Partnership recently reported that more than 24 projects worth just over $1.8 billion are currently underway in the Mile High City’s prosperous CBD. Metro-Denver based Lerch Bates has been selected to design the sophisticated vertical transportation systems of 1401 Lawrence.

Full-service building solutions firm The Beck Group has contracted Lerch Bates to perform complete vertical transportation consulting services including schematic designs, design development, construction documents management and construction administration for the nine elevator systems that are currently planned for 1401 Lawrence. The modern 22-story tower will be built on the southwestern border of downtown Denver’s CBD and historic LoDo neighborhood at the corner of 14th and Lawrence streets. The mid-rise will feature a glass façade encasing 298,000 square feet of premium office space, 8,000 square feet of ground floor retail and restaurant space and 397 parking spaces on floors two through seven. An official ground breaking ceremony for 1401 Lawrence was held on Oct. 1.

The city’s downtown is primed for an addition to its developing skyline.”

First Gulf, the commercial arm of Toronto-based Great Gulf, is developing 1401 Lawrence. The new tower was designed to meet LEED Gold certification and will feature 10-foot floor-to-ceiling windows, with many offering exquisite views of Colorado’s Rocky Mountains, contemporary fitness center, an outdoor terrace on the eighth floor and proximity to Denver Union Station, Denver Center for the Performing Arts and the city’s expansive 16th Street Mall.
