Lerch Bates Promotes Ken Dietz To Regional Manager Of Los Angeles/Las Vegas

Dietz Joined International Consulting Firm as a Project Manager in 2013

Lerch Bates, the world’s oldest and largest international consulting firm for vertical transportation, façade access and logistics, has promoted industry veteran Ken Dietz to regional manager of the Los Angeles and Las Vegas markets.

Lerch Bates opened its Las Vegas office in 2013 and named Dietz as a project manager for the region. Dietz managed vertical transportation system studies, performed vertical maintenance evaluations, designed and oversaw construction services for vertical transportation equipment and supported design and construction services for façade access and materials management handling systems. Prior to joining the employee-owned firm, he served as a vertical transportation project manager on several high profile Las Vegas projects including City Center, McCarran Airport Terminal 3 and The Linq.

Dietz earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Norwich University in Vermont and a Juris Doctor from Western New England University.

He joins the world’s oldest and largest elevator consulting firm with exceptional experience in the vertical transportation industry.
In his new role with Lerch Bates, Erwin will provide regional vertical transportation analysis and design. He will conduct and manage vertical transportation system studies, complete administration of design and construction services as well as design contract documents for vertical transportation equipment, perform vertical transportation maintenance evaluations and execute due diligence studies.

He began his career with the firm as a service and repair sales representative at its Dallas office. Erwin also served as a service and modernization sales manager at Fujitec America. Notable projects with which he has worked at both firms include MGM Grand and Monte Carlo in Las Vegas, Nevada, Denver International Airport and The Westin Denver Downtown hotel, Dominion Plaza, 1801 California Street (CenturyLink Tower) and 410 17th Street in Denver. Carl G. Cary and Peter Wallack Join Firm as It Steadily Increases Market Share in North America

Lerch Bates, an employee-owned international consulting firm for vertical transportation, façade access and logistics, has once again grown its staff as the company continues to expand in the United States and around the world. Carl G. Cary has been named consultant, elevator consulting group, for the firm’s Pacific Northwest Region and Peter Wallack joins the firm as consultant, elevator consulting group, for its New England Region.

Carl G. CaryIn his new role with Lerch Bates, Cary will provide elevator consulting services for new equipment design, modernization design and work, maintenance audit work and due diligence studies and services. He also will be responsible for vertical transportation studies, construction services and vertical transportation maintenance evaluations.

He previously served as a Pacific Northwest district sales manager for Won-Door Corporation where he oversaw the sales and consulting functions for all of the firm’s products in Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Alaska. Cary collaborated with architecture firms regarding the added benefits of Won-Door Corporation products compared with other traditional options and provided AIA accredited presentations to firms within the Pacific Northwest region. He also compiled yearly sales forecasting based on industry trends and the projects currently scheduled with the firm and created bids based on specifications to general contractors. Cary also worked as a senior new installation sales representative for KONE and then for ThyssenKrupp Elevator. He studied at the College of Southern Nevada in Henderson, Nevada and has more than 15 years of experience promoting products and directing sales teams to increase profitability, maximize market share and expand enterprise for various organizations.

Peter WallackPeter Wallack is a 30-year veteran of the vertical transportation industry. He recently joined Lerch Bates in its Boston office as a consultant serving the New England Region. He is focused on assisting architects, building owners and developers with their transportation challenges; his work encompasses creation and development of schematic design, review of bid submissions and negotiations with equipment manufacturers and implementation of modernization and acquisition surveys.

During his 15-year career with Delta Beckwith Elevator Company (a subsidiary of Otis in the greater Boston area), Wallack served as director of operations, accessibility and new equipment sales manager. Having had experience with a broad spectrum of products and designs (including custom and OEM), he has gained an extensive knowledge of the multi-faceted elevator industry. Wallack holds a Bachelor of Science degree from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York, and continued his graduate studies in civil engineering at Northeastern University in Boston.

Lerch Bates (China) Limited Expands Staff in Shanghai

Zhao, Qiu and Jiang Join Firm as It Increases Market Share in the Region

Lerch Bates (China) Limited, a Wholly Foreign-Owned Enterprise (WFOE) in Shanghai, China, continues to increase its staff as the firm experiences rapid growth in the region. Stanley Zhao has been named project consultant, elevator consulting group, Tian Qiu has joined the firm as office manager and Wenting Jiang is the firm’s new project administration assistant. Lerch Bates (China) Limited has hired eight additional staff members since March 2014.

Lerch Bates, an employee-owned international consulting firm for vertical transportation, façade access and logistics, opened its first office in the Asia Pacific region in mid-2012 with Lerch Bates (China) Limited in Shanghai. The firm announced in June 2014 that Keenan Potter was promoted to managing director of Lerch Bates Asia Pacific Limited, Hong Kong and Lerch Bates (China) Limited. Potter began his new role of managing the Lerch Bates’ growing presence in Asia with more than 20 years of specialized expertise in the façade access industry and extraordinary knowledge of the diverse region. He previously served as general manager of Lerch Bates (China) Limited and is fluent in Mandarin Chinese.

Stanley ZhaoStanley Zhao is the latest project consultant, elevator group, to join the Lerch Bates subsidiary. Zhao manages vertical transportation analysis, design and project management and is responsible for domestic high-rise construction project sales support, high-rise project traffic solution consulting and facilitating the high-rise bidding process. He previously served as a high-rise project sales and support supervisor for ThyssenKrupp Elevator Company (China) in Shanghai where he provided technical support for high-rise project sales, project vertical and horizontal traffic design solutions and the project tendering process. Notable projects on which he has worked include 81-story Dalian Eton Center in Dalian, Huabang World Trade City in Hefei, China Bohai Bank headquarters in Tianjin and Beijing Olympic Park Observation Tower in Beijing. Zhao earned a Bachelor of Science degree in mechanical engineering and automation from Tongji University in Shanghai.

Tian Qiu joins Lerch Bates (China) Limited as office manager, responsible for project support and office administration. She assists with project proposal preparation, internal and external coordination, project contract administration and billing and payment related issues. Qiu also is responsible for company credit control, employment assistance and office administration. Her notable project experience includes Rui Hong Xin Cheng in Shanghai, Future Ark and International Financial Centre in Guiyang and Qingdao Haitian Centre in Qingdao. Qiu is a member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (U.K.) and is a graduate of the University of Essex and Qingdao Technological University.

Wenting Jiang recently worked for Aedas, employing more than 1,500 architects, urban planners, landscape designers and interior designers in China, as a project secretary. She supported the firm’s design team and managed materials communications including project design briefs, project positioning reports and local design codes. She also was responsible for project forms and filing and travel arrangements for the design team. Wenting also worked for Chuang Heng Interior Space Design Engineering Co. Ltd, also in Shanghai as assistant to the general manager.

Ryan See Appointed Consultant, Elevator Consulting Group, to Manage Honolulu Office

Lerch Bates, an international consulting firm for vertical transportation, façade access and materials management, announced it opened a new office in Honolulu, Hawaii, and appointed Ryan See consultant, elevator consulting group, to manage the firm’s operations in the state. The addition of the Honolulu office increases the total number of domestic Lerch Bates offices to 25 and 34 internationally. See joins the world’s largest and oldest vertical transportation consulting group with more than seven years of extensive elevator industry experience.

Ryan SeeSee is tasked with providing vertical transportation consulting services for design, maintenance and new construction projects throughout Hawaii. He is responsible for vertical transportation system studies, complete administration of design and construction services, design and contract documents, vertical transportation maintenance evaluations and due diligence studies. Lerch Bates has been a pioneer of the vertical transportation industry in the state for more than 25 years.

See previously managed modernization and new construction projects for ThyssenKrupp and Otis Elevator Company in both Hawaii and Denver, Colo. His career also included serving as a new installation estimator and quality supervisor during his tenure with Otis. See worked on many landmark projects including Honolulu’s City Financial Tower, Ala Moana Pacific Center and Waihonua at Kewalo, 707 17th Street in Denver and Swedish Medical Center in Seattle. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration from of the University of Washington.

Lerch Bates announced in August that it had been awarded a two-year contract to consult on the modernization of the diverse elevator systems of the largest office complex in Hawaii. The multifaceted vertical transportation renovation project at Pacific Guardian Center (PGC) includes a 10-story 786-stall parking structure, twin 30-story office towers and the celebrated four-story Dillingham Transportation Building. Upgrading PGC’s elevator systems is one of Lerch Bates’ largest projects in the western United States. The program includes replacing Westinghouse Mark V equipment in the two seven-car banks and installing destination based technology.

PGC is an award winning office complex that features more than 630,000 square feet of first-class office and retail space located in the heart of Honolulu’s Central Business District. The mirrored glass towers, named after their respective positions, Mauka (“mountain”) and Makai (“ocean”), are juxtaposed by the Mediterranean Revival/Italian Renaissance style of the the historic Dillingham Transportation Building. The vertical transportation modernization program was designed to meet the expected future demands of the center while maintaining the rich character and environment of the property. The project is expected to begin this fall and be completed in the fall of 2016.

Baker Joins International Consulting Firm with Three Decades of Industry Experience

Robert BakerLerch Bates announced respected industry veteran Robert Baker has been named business line manager, logistics consulting group. Baker is a seasoned leader with more than thirty years of experience in design consulting and engineering documentation. He joins the firm in its metropolitan Denver world headquarters.

Baker’s vast experience includes consulting on materials management, waste management and materials handling projects throughout the United States. He also has had extensive involvement with complex systems including automated transport systems, distribution centers and waste processing departments and has experience in healthcare, mixed-use and transportation projects. He previously managed a busy computer aided drafting and engineering department for a major foodservice consulting firm. Baker also has provided consulting and design services on significant materials handling projects utilizing both advanced technology and more traditional solutions. He is exceptionally proficient with both Revit and AutoCAD software.

Lerch Bates Appoints Tim O’Brien Project Manager

O’Brien Manages Automated Logistics Solutions for Great Lakes Region

Tim O'BrienLerch Bates, an international consulting firm for vertical transportation, façade access and materials management, announced Tim O’Brien has joined the company in its Chicago office as project manager.

In his new role, O’Brien provides technical consulting services to architects, building owners and facility operators on material handling systems as well as collaborates on materials management, elevator and façade access consulting services. He manages automated logistics solutions for the healthcare industry as well as for commercial construction projects through the application of various automated material distribution systems. O’Brien also consults on the development of process improvement programs for healthcare facilities through the application of automated solutions.

“Tim O’Brien joins Lerch Bates with extensive healthcare automated logistics experience and as an automated logistics designer,” said Lerch Bates President and CEO Bart Stephan. “His diverse experience in multiple roles will greatly benefit our exceptional logistics team. Prior to joining Lerch Bates, O’Brien served as an application engineer for Swisslog where he provided consultation, engineering and estimates for the sales and installation of healthcare pneumatic tube systems. He also has worked as an estimator and project engineer for Mortenson Construction, providing detailed estimates and on-site project management for commercial construction.

O’Brien earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism from Southern Illinois University and an Associate in Arts – Architecture Sample Plan from Harper College in Palatine, Ill.

The “Unit Material” Empire Strikes Back

As consultants, we are expected to be the experts.  So, we spend a fair amount of our time doing research on new products that are on the market.  Honestly, it is amazing to see what is out there in new technology, including, elevators, Automated Guided Vehicles, Tug systems, Pneumatic Tube Systems, Pneumatic Chute Systems, AS/RS Systems (Automatic Storage/Retrieval Systems), and horizontal carousels to name a few.

In the past couple of weeks, we at Lerch Bates have had the opportunity to see some of the new robotic technology on the market for healthcare facilities, and I have to say that it seems we are getting closer to some of the technology portrayed in the sci-fi movies of the 1970s and 1980s.  Think R2-D2.  While we have yet to see a hover craft for unit material delivery in hospitals, we have still seen some pretty exciting technology.

Last week, Lerch Bates saw one such technology in action…the autonomous mobile robot.  These are small transport units available now, that can deliver up to 50 pounds of supplies, mail, samples, etc. These robots are intelligent enough to map an area and store where obstructions may be along a path so that they can travel along the route to get to the destination.  They can even detect people and can navigate around obstructions not on their map.  They are completely independent devices and can be programmed to say specific messages and play specific songs in route or at the destination.  It is almost as if they have been assigned a “personality.” These are definitely an option for anyone looking at possible solutions for small items to be transported via materials handling system, rather than using costly FTE “sneaker power.”  In some cases, these could even be used to relieve unit supply traffic on an existing Pneumatic Tube System.

Lerch Bates strives to continue to keep a strong pulse on the technologies available to give our clients the best options.  In fact, this is one of the best and most interesting parts of our job.  Who knows, maybe hover technology is next?

Healthcare Design Conference (HDC) 2010

Lerch Bates attended the Healthcare Design Conference in November in Las Vegas, with our Materials Management/Materials Handling business line.  In these times, it seems as though attendance at trade shows is waning with the tightening of belts and closer monitoring of overhead expenses.  However, you never would have known that at this show held at the MGM Grand in Vegas.

Even with our struggling economy, it is very reassuring to see a turn out like this.  It means several things:

  • There is healthcare design work happening
  • Architects and designers are still keeping up with their continuing education
  • Architects and designers are still excited about what they are doing
  • New work  and optimism are simmering all of the time

The healthcare design industry seems to remain somewhat strong in these times.  Many attendees passed by the booths with optimism that has not yet been reached in other design disciplines. There were several opportunities to chat with our clients and potential clients about their feelings about the future.

This was great to be able to connect with our clients to see what the future may hold.
