Lerch Bates Appoints Steve Henderson Senior Consultant, Elevator Consulting Group

Lerch Bates, an employee-owned international consulting firm for vertical transportation, façade access and logistics, announced Steve Henderson has been named senior consultant, elevator consulting group. He joins the world’s oldest and largest elevator consulting firm establishing a presence in New Orleans reporting to its Dallas office.

Steve will provide elevator and escalator consulting services for new equipment design, modernization design work, maintenance audits, and due diligence studies in his new role with Lerch Bates. He will also be responsible for vertical transportation studies, construction services, vertical transportation evaluations, and contracting documents for equipment.

“Steve is a much welcomed addition to the Lerch Bates team,” said Lerch Bates President and CEO Bart Stephan. “Louisiana, Mississippi and Arkansas are very important markets for our firm and he has proven midrise and high-rise vertical transportation knowledge and experience that will support our growth in those regions.”

Steve brings over 20 years of industry experience serving as a Branch Manager in Colorado, Texas and Louisiana for Dover/ThyssenKrupp Elevator Company. During that time, he has proven to be a focused, results oriented leader, excelling in all facets of evaluation. The knowledge and skills honed over those two decades will serve him well in his new role and are a welcome addition to Lerch Bates Inc.

Steve received a Bachelor of Science from Southeastern Louisiana State University.

Downtown San Francisco is undergoing a dramatic transformation as new high-rise towers are currently under construction and many existing towers are being renovated. Lerch Bates, the world’s oldest and largest international consulting firm for vertical transportation, façade access and logistics, has been awarded a contract to modernize the elevators inside One Montgomery Tower in San Francisco’s Financial District.

Founded in 1947, Lerch Bates is the oldest and largest vertical transportation consulting firm in the world and has modernized elevator and escalator systems around the globe. One Montgomery Tower currently utilizes the 23 original Westinghouse elevators that were installed in the early ’80s. The vertical transportation systems were last renovated in 2001, including the installation of a destination based dispatch system.

Pacific Telesis Tower - 1 Montgomery Street, San FranciscoOne Montgomery Tower, part of the Post Montgomery Center complex in the city’s Golden Triangle district, was designed by Skidmore, Owings and Merrill and is constructed of structural steel columns sheathed in highly polished sunset red granite panels complemented by gray tempered glass. The first and second floor levels of the high-rise are clad with stainless steel and black granite panels. The 500-foot 38-story Class A trophy office tower, completed it 1982, includes 684,959 square feet of premier office space and is certified LEED-EB Platinum by the U.S. Green Building Council.

Post Montgomery Center is an impressive mixed-use structure with almost one million gross square feet of office and retail space. The complex consists of One Montgomery Tower and Crocker Galleria, a retail destination featuring a diverse collection of shops and specialty retailers. A San Francisco landmark since opening in 1982, Crocker Galleria boasts a spectacular glass pavilion soaring above three levels of service stores, unique boutiques and a broad selection of restaurants. A farmers’ market visited by thousands of visitors a year is held every Thursday.

Jim TurnerLerch Bates, the world’s oldest and largest international consulting firm for vertical transportation, façade access and logistics, has promoted Jim Turner to vice president, modernization, Elevator Consulting Group. Turner joined Lerch Bates in 2014 as a project manager, Great Lakes Region, Elevator Consulting Group, in Chicago.

Turner has more than 24 years of comprehensive experience with elevators and escalators and with professional services firms in the building industry. In his new role, Turner will report directly to Lerch Bates President and CEO Bart Stephan and will work closely with the firm’s area vice presidents and elevator consultants to bolster its modernization consulting processes. Turner, in his previous role with Lerch Bates, supported the company’s Great Lakes Region operations by providing vertical transportation consulting services for new installation designs, maintenance, due diligence and modernization projects with a particular focus on metropolitan Chicago.

Prior to joining Lerch Bates, he worked as national project developer at mechanical, electrical and plumbing industry leader KJWW. He spent the entirety of his vertical transportation career working for Montgomery Elevator Company and KONE. Following assignments in the Montgomery/KONE branch network, Turner focused the majority of his career on the development of the modernization business line. As vice president, modernization, he supported all elements of the modernization business including new product introduction, sales, engineering and installation. Turner holds a Bachelor of Science degree in civil engineering technology from Southern Illinois University and management certification from KONE Executive Edge/London Business School.

Blackwood previously worked for Otis Elevator Company/United Technologies Corporation (UTC) in Dallas for 43 years. He most recently served as a service manager but also worked as a service superintendent, construction superintendent and combination superintendent during his extensive career with the company.

Blackwood has been a Certified Elevator Inspector (CEI) since 1993 and has been an instructor for the National Association of Elevator Safety Authorities’ (NAESA) National Elevator Industry Educational Program (NEIEP) since 2008.

Hilton Worldwide, Inc., selected Lerch Bates last year to provide elevator and escalator maintenance management services for the company’s Hilton portfolio in the United States. The firm designed a custom maintenance management program to support and improve the ongoing maintenance and repair of Hilton’s elevators and escalators. The Hilton-owned, managed and franchised properties participating in the program exceeds 4,300 elevators and escalators in more than 1,400 hotels across the country.

Lerch Bates announced in July 2013 that it was chosen to work on another high profile downtown Los Angeles project. The firm is designing the modern façade access system for Wilshire Grand, a high-rise tower being developed by Korean Air Lines Co. that will be the tallest building west of Chicago when it is completed in 2017. The $1 billion 73-story glass-clad tower is currently being constructed in the city’s financial district and just blocks from the bourgeoning entertainment district that is anchored by the Staples Center and L.A. Live. The tower will include a four-star hotel as well as 400,000 square feet of office, 45,100 square feet of retail space and a soaring spire that will raise the total height of the skyscraper to 1,100 square feet, rising 82 feet higher than the city’s 1,018-feet U.S. Bank Tower.

The addition of the Honolulu office increases the total number of domestic Lerch Bates offices to 25 and 34 internationally. Ryan SeeSee is tasked with providing vertical transportation consulting services for design, maintenance and new construction projects throughout Hawaii. He is responsible for vertical transportation system studies, complete administration of design and construction services, design and contract documents, vertical transportation maintenance evaluations and due diligence studies. Lerch Bates has been a pioneer of the vertical transportation industry in the state for more than 25 years.

Upgrading PGC’s elevator systems is one of Lerch Bates’ largest projects in the western United States. The program includes replacing Westinghouse Mark V equipment in the two seven-car banks and installing destination based technology. Destination based elevators, or destination dispatch systems, are changing how elevator systems are built and modernized and are quickly becoming the industry standard when upgrading the systems in buildings with three or more elevators. Every passenger enters his or her destination floor on entry terminals located in a lobby or in a hallway adjacent to the elevator shafts and the system groups passengers together depending on their desired destinations. The optimization process results in riders who are travelling to the same floors being grouped together.

Dillingham Transportation Building was constructed in 1929 for Walter F. Dillingham, founder of the Hawaiian Dredging Company (later Dillingham Construction). The building was designed architect Lincoln Rogers of Los Angeles and is significant for its associations with the commercial development of Honolulu and the Dillingham family empire of businesses. The building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979.

Industry Leader Joins Pacific Northwest Office
with More Than 16 Years of Engineering and Management Experience

Cory HunterLerch Bates, an international consulting firm for vertical transportation, façade access and materials management, announced industry veteran Cory Hunter has been named consultant, elevator consulting group. He joins the world’s largest and oldest vertical transportation consulting firm’s Pacific Northwest office located in greater Seattle with more than 16 years of notable industry experience. The firm’s regional office now consists of seven elevator consultants.

Hunter is based in Portland, Oregon, and is tasked with providing vertical transportation consulting services for design, maintenance, due diligence and modernizations throughout the Pacific Northwest. He previously managed Centric Elevator Corporation in Portland where he specialized in growth strategy development, vertical transportation modernization and maintenance. During his tenure at the firm, Hunter was instrumental in the intensive growth of the company in the state by capitalizing on the implementation of non-proprietary equipment design and placement in the marketplace. He spearheaded many notable projects for the firm including elevator modernizations at Oregon Health & Science University and various modernization projects for Jackson County.

Prior to his work at Centric Elevator Corporation, Hunter was an international lumber trader, coordinating international business development, logistics and domestic distribution of hardwoods and plywood products. Hunter started his career as a technical engineer specialist in the United States Marine Corps in 1998 where he was trained as a land surveyor, responsible for designing buildings and roads for military applications.

Hunter is a qualified elevator inspector (QEI) and developed a written maintenance control program for use in the Northwest. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Oregon State University as well as advanced degrees in management including a Doctor of Philosophy in lift engineering management and a Master of Business Administration.

Crawford is an accomplished leader with more than 20 years of experience in sales management, staff leadership and strategic business planning.

Crawford oversees strategic account relationships as well as develops new strategic account clients in her new role with Lerch Bates. She has been in the elevator industry for 16 years and served as a sales manager and executive account manager at Otis Elevator Company for 13 years in the greater Los Angeles market. She designed tactical programs and initiatives to grow all facets of the company’s service business including repairs, modernizations, retention and acquiring new business. She also spent time working with KONE and Arizona Elevator Company giving her broad knowledge in the elevator industry.

Constructed in 1920 and designed by famed architect Benjamin Marshall, The Drake Hotel has a renowned history unmatched by any other hotel property in Chicago.

The oldest and largest elevator consulting firm in the world, Lerch Bates has been the international leader in vertical transportation for more than 65 years. The firm relies on its unique expertise in elevator engineering and technology to design and modernize elevator systems all over the world. Lerch Bates will perform elevator equipment surveys, code compliance reviews, ADA compliance consulting, bidding assistance and construction services for the five main guest elevators, originally installed in 1920, and four service elevators at The Drake.

The storied hotel, conceived by John and Tracy Drake, features 535 guestrooms on 10 floors including 55 executive guestrooms, 73 individually decorated suites and a luxurious five-room presidential suite. The Drake has made history many times during its fabled past including being the first hotel in The Windy City to provide air conditioning in every guestroom as well as color television for every guest.
